Built in 1889 as the Kynuna Hotel, this pub on the Landsborough Highway is the last of the town's original hotels still standing. Local history ties it to the Waltzing Matilda story: Banjo Paterson is said to have called in not long after hearing of a shearer's death at nearby Combo Waterhole in 1894, shortly before writing the song at neighbouring Dagworth Station. Under its current management since 2018, the hotel remains the social hub for one of the most remote pockets of western Queensland — population under a hundred. The kitchen turns out counter meals including a well-regarded homemade curry steak pie, the bar has a wide veranda for watching road trains pass, and there are basic motel rooms and a caravan park for travellers breaking the long haul between Winton and the Gulf. It's less a heritage set-piece than a working outback pub that happens to carry genuine folk history. A natural stop on the Matilda Highway for anyone tracing the song's origins.
