Cheeditha ArtGroup

WA

Four language groups — Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Kariyarra and Eastern Guruma — are represented among the small group of artists working out of Cheeditha, an Aboriginal community a short drive from Roebourne in the Pilbara. The output ranges wider than paint on canvas: alongside work grounded in country and creation stories, the group produces glasswork and textiles — scarves and tote bags carrying the same imagery. Wendy Warrie, painting since 2001, draws on the Yindjibarndi creation story; Maisie Indji, who grew up in Roebourne, paints the ocean and rivers she loves for their colour. The gallery and studio sit on Aboriginal-owned land and are registered with WA's Indigenous tourism body as a gallery, studio and gift shop. It's a modest, community-run counterpart to the bigger Pilbara art centres, worth the detour — with a call ahead first, given the remote setting — for anyone tracking the region's Aboriginal art movement to its source.
