Camel rides along Mindil Beach are as close to a Darwin institution as beach tourism gets, working the sand most days of the week and setting up at the famous Thursday and Sunday Mindil Markets when the crowds arrive for the food stalls and the sunset over the Arafura Sea. Rides are short — long enough to feel the animal's rolling gait and take in the view back toward the city skyline — and run in small groups, with a strict weight limit per seat and a minimum rider age of four. It's a low-key, family-scale operation rather than a big tourism outfit, and it shows in details like the direct phone booking line and the straightforward cancellation policy. Between the markets, the beach and the light at that time of day, it's one of the more photographed few minutes in the Top End, and one of the easiest ways to add something distinctive to an evening built around Mindil's food vans and craft stalls.
