In the Central Tablelands north of Bathurst, the old Hill End and Tambaroora goldfields drew thousands in the 1870s and gave up some of the largest nuggets ever found. A designated public fossicking area runs for over a kilometre along Tambaroora Creek, reached off the Hill End Road and marked by yellow and blue arrows, where you can pan and dig for gold; further fossicking is allowed across the Hill End & Tambaroora Commons under the usual conditions. The heritage precinct of the Historic Site itself is protected.
