On Melville Island in the Tiwi group, an artist-governed centre that pairs the architecturally designed Kutuwulumi Gallery with the Muluwurri Museum, established in 1988 as the only Tiwi-controlled keeping place on the island. The museum holds a collection of Tiwi artefacts, carvings, paintings, prints, photographs and war medals, while the gallery shows work by the Milikapiti artists who own and run the place. A cultural anchor for the community, across the water north of Darwin.
