The CalileHotel

Conceived by Brisbane's Malouf family and designed by local architects Richards & Spence, this Fortitude Valley hotel opened in 2018 and reframed the city stay as an urban resort. Rooms open onto arched balconies above a central pool ringed by palms, while the ground floor gives way to James Street's boutiques, a day spa and the Greek restaurant Hellenika. The palette runs to pale terrazzo, curved plaster and greenery, a Mediterranean-meets-tropical language particular to Brisbane's climate. It has since become the highest-placed Australian entry on the World's 50 Best Hotels list, and remains family-owned rather than part of a chain. The Lobby Bar draws locals as readily as guests, and the whole thing operates less as a landmark than as a working piece of the neighbourhood it helped define.
