Reached by a spectacular unsealed road that climbs and drops through the ranges between Mittagong and Taralga, Wombeyan is a marble karst - unusual among Australian caves, where limestone is the rule. The self-guided Fig Tree Cave lets visitors wander at their own pace past folded, banded formations lit chamber by chamber, and guided tours reach the deeper Junction and Kooringa caves. The reserve sits in a green valley of grazing kangaroos and clear creeks, with a campground that fills on summer weekends. The journey in is an adventure in its own right; take it slowly.
