Abercrombie Caves

NSW

South of Bathurst in a quiet fold of the Central Tablelands, the Abercrombie Caves centre on the Archway - the largest natural limestone arch in the southern hemisphere, a vast tunnel the size of a cathedral that a creek once carved clean through the rock. A self-guided boardwalk runs beneath it past a timber dance floor built by gold-rush miners who held balls here in the 1880s. Guided tours reach the more decorated chambers beyond. The surrounding reserve is a peaceful campground of river flats and grazing wallabies, well off the main roads and all the better for it.
