English businessman John Barnes built this Murrumburrah store in 1860 and ran it as a department store until John O'Meally, of Ben Hall's bushranger gang, shot him dead. The Barnes name traded here for a century. Wendy and Stephen Byrne, former Sydney hairdressers, have run a café in it since 2012, making oversized pies and smoked goods by hand alongside a seasonal breakfast and lunch menu. The emporium shelves stock condiments, gifts and sweets.
