On Badgerup Road in Gnangara, north of Perth, a family that has grown strawberries here for more than two decades opens the rows to pickers each spring, usually from late winter into November depending on the season. It's a bring-your-gumboots operation, the sandy soil turns soft after rain, with a flat cash price per tray and staff on hand to point pickers toward the ripest rows. There's no shop or café, just trestle tables, scales and whatever is ready that Saturday; when the crop runs out for the day, the farm closes early regardless of the posted hours. It draws a steady stream of Perth families for whom a Saturday morning here has become something of a ritual, more about the picking than any polish. Hours and season dates shift week to week, so a check of the farm's Facebook page before driving out is worth the five minutes it takes.
