On Brisbane Street in the middle of Launceston, Mad Hatters Treats is a proper old-fashioned lolly shop — the kind that runs on pick-and-mix and a sweet tooth. The premise is uncomplicated: fill a bag by the hundred grams, half-kilo or full kilo from a wall of colour, and let nostalgia do the choosing. It trades on the simple, cross-generational pleasure of a sweet shop, drawing kids after a treat and adults after the flavours of their own childhoods, and keeps longer hours on weekends when the town is out and about. In a city better known for its Georgian streetscapes, it's a small, cheerful detour for anyone who never quite grew out of the candy counter.
