At Round Hill Head, on the uncrowded stretch of coast where Agnes Water meets the sea south of the Great Barrier Reef's southern tip, this ASI-accredited school has run daily surf lessons for over two decades — seven days a week, Christmas Day excepted. There's no need to book ahead in person: turn up at the shop by 10am and sign on, though online booking is available too. Instructors work in small teams to keep the student-to-teacher ratio workable even on busy days, walking total beginners through standing up, paddling and reading whitewash before anyone's out past the break. A photographer works the beach during lessons, so the day gets documented without anyone needing to bring a waterproof camera. Board hire rounds out the offering for those wanting to keep practising solo afterwards. Agnes Water is a deliberate detour off the highway between Bundaberg and Gladstone, and this is the kind of unpretentious, locally run operation that makes the detour worth it.
