In the western Cape York community of Aurukun, this centre carries one of Australia's most distinctive Aboriginal sculptural traditions. Working for the five Wik and Kugu ceremonial clans, its carvers make painted wooden figures whose lineage runs back to collections gathered in the late 1800s, now held in the South Australian Museum and the National Museum. It represents artists including Telstra Award winner Keith Wikmunea and keeps both men's and women's fine-art practice alive.
