The first cave opened to visitors in Western Australia, Ngilgi sits in the ridge behind Yallingup at the northern end of the Margaret River wine country. A great sloping entrance chamber leads down into galleries hung with shawls, stalactites and rare helictites, and semi-guided tours let visitors linger among the formations at their own pace. The cave carries a Wardandi Noongar story of a battle between the good spirit Ngilgi and an evil spirit driven out through the rock. Combined with the surf breaks, forests and cellar doors nearby, it makes a fine half-day underground on a Margaret River trip.
