Barn Hives

Three off-grid pods on a vineyard above Smiths Beach, in the Margaret River cape country at Yallingup. Raminta and Egidijus Rusilas built them hive-shaped and industrial — solar to a heat pump for hot water, rainwater to the tap, a pellet fire for the cold — and run the sustainability seriously enough to hold Ecotourism Australia's ECO Certification, which most stays trading on the word "eco" don't. The name comes from the bee hives kept around the property, and the honey is theirs. Adults only, a few minutes from the beach and central to the cape's wineries.
