Rolin Farms

QLD

Rutters Road cuts through Elimbah in that quiet stretch of the Moreton Bay hinterland where the Bruce Highway's hum fades and the paddocks take over, and it's here that Rolin Farms has kept its rows open to anyone willing to bend down and do the picking. This is a working family farm rather than a polished agritourism production, and that's part of the appeal: the strawberries are the point, not the photo opportunity, even if you'll likely end up taking one anyway.

The season runs June through October, the cooler Queensland months that suit the fruit best, and on weekends the rows fill with families working punnet by punnet along the low green beds. There's no great mystery to the method — you're handed a container, pointed toward the rows, and left to find the reddest ones yourself, paying by the punnet for what you gather. It's slower than a supermarket run and that's rather the point, a chance to see where the fruit actually comes from before it becomes jam or is folded into pancake batter.

Back near the entrance, the farm shop does the rest of the work: soft-serve and scooped strawberry ice cream, jars of jam made from the farm's own surplus, and a griddle turning out pancakes alongside proper coffee — enough to turn a picking morning into a lingering one. The farm keeps sensible daily hours, open from mid-morning through the afternoon, though the pick-your-own rows themselves come alive specifically on weekends when the crowds arrive. Elimbah itself is unassuming, a blink of a town between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, but for a few months of the year it's worth the detour — arrive with an appetite and leave with stained fingers and a full punnet, which is really how a strawberry season should end.
