Wellington Caves

NSW

On the plains south of Dubbo, the Wellington Caves are famous twice over - for the great stalagmite known as the Altar in the Cathedral Cave, one of the largest in the country, and for the fossil-rich sediments that made this one of the first sites where scientists recognised Australia's extinct megafauna. Guided tours take in the Cathedral and Gaden caves, and a phosphate mine dug through the hill in the early twentieth century can also be explored. The complex sits in a pleasant reserve with a campground, an easy detour off the Mitchell Highway through the Central West.
