On the Sturt Highway at the edge of Renmark, opposite the golf course, a factory-door outlet sells the output of one of Australia's largest almond concerns. Almondco is a grower-owned cooperative established in 1944, supplied by the great majority of the country's almond farmers, and the Almond Hut puts its range within public reach: natural, roasted and flavoured almonds, chocolate-coated varieties, almond meal and bread, gift boxes and almond gelato, much of it in resealable containers. Staff offer a plain-spoken account of how the crop moves from Riverland orchard to processing floor, which gives the shop the feel of a producer's window rather than a generic roadside stop. Open weekdays, it is a straightforward, well-stocked place to buy the region's signature crop close to its source.
