Up a flight of stairs off Dempster Street, the room looks out through slender pines, an unexpectedly secluded perch above a port town's main strip. The draw is coffee roasted on site: owner and barista Glen turns out weekly small-batch beans under the Upward Spiral label, alongside a house tea range packaged in the shop. The kitchen leans Japanese, with miso scrambled eggs and karaage chicken among the breakfast and lunch plates, and the fit-out favours greenery and handmade ceramics. Since moving into a larger space with a commercial kitchen at the end of 2022, it has become the town's reference point for a properly made flat white, a rare thing this far along the south coast.
