On the Bulcock Beach esplanade at Caloundra, Fifty Acres makes gelato and sorbetto the slow way — by hand, in small batches, with real fruit at the centre of everything. Whenever they can, the makers buy produce from local farmers' markets, which means the menu is genuinely seasonal and cheerfully unpredictable; flavours come and go with what's ripe and, by their own admission, with the mood of the day, sometimes changing before it's out. That restlessness throws up things you won't find in a supermarket freezer — roasted pineapple sorbetto, a baklava gelato spun through with Manuka honey, rotating hot-chocolate specials in the cooler months. The whole ethos celebrates the hand-made over the factory-made, imperfections and all. Right on the water at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, it's a small maker with real conviction and a cabinet worth checking twice.
