Ltyentye Apurte TraditionalCraft Centre

NT

A group of Arrernte men at Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), around 85 kilometres southeast of Alice Springs, started this craft centre in 2018 after watching skills their elders had taught them start to disappear. What they make is functional rather than decorative in the gallery sense: kwetere (nulla-nullas), terurre (clapsticks), urtne (coolamons) and alye, fighting and hunting boomerangs, each carved from wood sourced from the country around the community. The centre runs as a social enterprise, with administrative backing from the Atyenhenge Atherre Aboriginal Corporation, and its stated purpose is as much about passing the craft on to younger men as it is about selling the finished pieces. It's a member of Desart, the peak body for Central Australian Aboriginal art centres, and showed work at Desert Mob in 2025. Visits to the Alice Road workshop are by appointment — call ahead before making the drive out from Alice Springs.
