Guided snorkel tours run out of Brunswick Heads Marina, a short drive north of Byron Bay, to the Julian Rocks Marine Reserve, known locally as Nguthungulli, where grey nurse and leopard sharks, turtles and rays gather. A marine biologist guides the two-hour trip, reading the reef and its seasonal visitors; a 200-metre swim is the entry bar. The same boat also runs whale-watching, dolphin cruises and sunset river trips, with the snorkel season opening as the water clears and warms.
