Best time to visit
With farmers markets running weekly outdoors, brewery beer gardens facing the hinterland, and a coastal walking track exposed to cliff winds, the shoulder months either side of summer suit the mix best — mild enough for outdoor markets and clifftop walking, cooler than the humid subtropical peak, while studios and galleries operate year-round regardless of weather.
What sets it apart
The imbalance is the distinction: craft outnumbers dining roughly twenty to one, and small-batch drinks producers outnumber restaurants and cafés outright. That skew, spread across Byron Bay, Mullumbimby and Bangalow rather than one main strip, points to a region organised around makers and producers rather than hospitality — studios you can watch working, distilleries drawing on their own land, and markets run by growers rather than event organisers.
