Chris and Val Hall left seventeen years of corporate work in 1980 for 750 acres at Monkerai, and within a year found themselves hosting 30,000 people at the Tanelorn music festival. Then the real work: dams, five kilometres of road, an 11,000-volt supply, and the Woolshed in 1983. Twenty boutique rooms came later, along with cabins, cottages and camping on five kilometres of river. Around 200 cattle still work the property. Their daughters run it now.
