Sections of Talgai State Forest, about 35 kilometres northwest of Warwick, are released as general-permission areas for gold fossicking. Reached by gravel roads past the small town of Pratten, the ground holds alluvial gold in its creek gravels, a remnant of the Darling Downs goldfields worked in the nineteenth century. Fossickers use the formed tracks to reach the creek areas; there are no facilities and camping isn't permitted, with the nearest beds in Warwick. A Queensland fossicking licence is required.
