Trading on Mildura Street in the Fyshwick industrial belt, this is Canberra's oldest fresh-food market, in operation for more than fifty years. Under one roof sit greengrocers, butchers, a fishmonger, bakers, delis and specialty grocers, open Thursday to Sunday from early morning to late afternoon. It is where much of the city shops for produce away from the supermarkets, and where a good number of Canberra kitchens source their ingredients. Weekends bring live music and busier trade. The setting is unglamorous - a large shed among warehouses - but the draw is the range and turnover of genuinely fresh produce and the independent stallholders who have held their spots for years. For a planned city without much market culture, it is the closest thing to a food hall of long standing.
