In 1955 a bulldozer flipped a rock on a road outside Canowindra and a local named Bill Simpson worked out what it was. The slab went to the Australian Museum. In 1993 Alex Ritchie came back with the town and dug up four thousand more Devonian fish across eight species, which sat under the showground grandstand until a storage shed was built in 2019. David Attenborough came in 2013 and called them world class.
