A former country pub on Barker Street in Castlemaine, restored in 2012 and given over to art. Nine upstairs rooms take their names from Australian painters, from Clarice Beckett to Brett Whiteley, and downstairs a venue called The Coolroom hosts jazz and live music. The look is warm and historically layered rather than luxe, with no pools or spas to speak of. It suits travellers drawn to central Victoria's arts scene who want somewhere with a point of view.
