On the ocean side of K'gari (Fraser Island), the Champagne Pools are the only safe place to swim in the sea on the island's surf coast, where the water beyond is patrolled by sharks and swept by rips. Volcanic rock forms a chain of shallow pools at the water's edge, and as the swell breaks over the outer rim it fills them with foaming, bubbling whitewater - the champagne that gives them their name. Fish dart in the clear pools between waves. Reached by four-wheel-drive up the beach near Waddy Point, it is a magical spot on the world's largest sand island.
