In Morton National Park on the edge of the Southern Highlands, Fitzroy Falls pours eighty-one metres off the sandstone escarpment into the forested Yarrunga Valley. Viewing platforms steps from the visitor centre give the head-on view, and an easy clifftop walk leads to a string of further lookouts along the rim, each opening onto the wooded gorge and the blue ranges beyond. Lyrebirds scratch in the undergrowth and wombats graze the grass at dusk. Fed by the plateau's swamps, the falls are at their thundering best after rain.
