Dov and Immy Lachovich Marcus arrived in Melbourne from Israel in 2010 and began baking under the name Baked for Sofia, a wholesale operation that outgrew its rental kitchen before the pair opened their first retail counter in Elsternwick in 2020. The bakery draws on family recipes carried from the Middle East, turning out laminated pastries, sourdough and a rotating tray of sweet and savoury slices. Most counters open by 7.30am and trade into the afternoon, restocking cabinets as the morning queue moves through. Catering trays are available for offices and events, but the walk-in counter remains the core of the business. What began as a single Elsternwick shopfront in 2020 has grown into a small, still independently run network of seven counters across Melbourne's south-east and inner suburbs, including the Caulfield North shop on Orrong Crescent, open most mornings from 7.30am.
