Vietnamese street food is not what most travellers expect on the long Western Highway run between Melbourne and Adelaide, which is part of why this Nelson Street cafe has built such a following. Opened in 2019, it turns out banh mi, the roast pork roll being the one regulars name, alongside pho, noodle bowls and the occasional banh xeo, plus Vietnamese iced coffee and a case of baked goods. The cooking is done on the premises and the format is fast and unfussy, pitched at both locals and the steady stream of drivers pulling off the highway. In a town of a few thousand it has become the eating stop people plan their timing around, and its reputation rests on consistency rather than reinvention.
