Across Ballina, Lennox Head, Evans Head and Yamba, Summerland Surf School has run two-hour lessons on the Northern Rivers coast since 1997, when Simon and Lorraine Freeden set out to teach surfing to whoever wanted to learn, regardless of age or ability. Both are accredited Surfing Australia coaches, and nearly three decades in, the school still runs its standard sessions daily — mornings at Ballina and Lennox, afternoons at Evans Head's Main Beach — with soft boards, wetsuits and gear supplied for beginners. Packages run from single lessons through to three-session blocks for people wanting to properly consolidate what they've learned rather than try surfing once and call it done. The spread across four towns means a lesson can usually be arranged wherever a visitor happens to be staying on the Ballina–Yamba stretch, without the crowds or costs of the bigger Byron Bay schools half an hour north.
