Martin Ganter has been making pens by hand in Melbourne for seven years, mostly from Australian timber but also from things that used to be something else — piano cases, dressing tables, cricket bats, golf clubs. Burls, scars and colour shifts are left in rather than machined out, which is the whole argument. Opal, paua, mother-of-pearl, Fordite and deer antler turn up in the inlays. He does custom engraving. A tree is planted for every pen sold.
