The volunteers who show you around are mostly retired firefighters, which is the point: the stories come with the appliances. Ten thousand items fill the former Metropolitan Fire Brigade headquarters on Gisborne Street, including vintage engines, eighteenth-century uniforms, helmets, badges and models.
