In the Adelaide Hills, twenty minutes from the city, a single genus is given the kind of devotion most gardens reserve for entire plant collections. Littlewood grows agapanthus almost exclusively, and does so at a scale that's hard to fathom until you're walking among the 300,000 plants that bloom across the property each summer. The point of difference is maturity: what leaves here are bare-rooted plants that have already flowered on the farm, not the tissue-cultured seedlings sold elsewhere that might take years to bloom. Twenty-odd varieties are on offer, from dwarf forms to towering 1.8-metre giants, including harder-to-find selections such as the deep purple Guilfoyle. Because everything is grown on-site, visitors can see exactly what they're buying in flower before it comes home with them — a rare kind of transparency in a trade that often sells on packaging alone.
