High in the Main Range on the Queensland side of the border near Killarney, Queen Mary Falls drops forty metres off the rim of an ancient volcano into a rainforest gorge. An easy circuit walk descends to the base and back, passing lookouts over the falls and the wooded valley, through forest alive with birds and, at dusk, pademelons on the grass. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area, the falls sit in cool tableland country a world away from the coast below. The picnic ground and nearby cafe make it a favourite weekend drive from the Scenic Rim.
