Commonwealth Street's contribution to the plant-based movement is this pared-back deli and cafe, which opened in 2017 as one of Sydney's first fully vegan delis. The counter does the talking: house-cured 'meats', cashew and cultured cheeses, and sandwiches built like their delicatessen forebears, the reuben with its layered pastrami-style seitan being the one people come back for. Mornings bring tofu scramble and thick-cut toast; the cabinet fills with slices and salads by midday. It trades daytime only, seven days, and the fit-out is deliberately minimal, all pale wood and tile, letting the food carry the argument that plant-based need not mean austere. A small grocery arm stocks the harder-to-find vegan pantry goods. Consistent and unshowy, it has become a Surry Hills fixture.
