Drive 8km south of Mount Compass on the Fleurieu Peninsula, turn left into Sneyd Road, and you'll find the McCaul family's working Jersey dairy with a farm shop attached. Walk in to buy direct: the Pepato (Top Gold at the SA Dairy Awards), Cheddar (Champion at the 2005 Australian Grand Dairy Awards), the only mainland-produced Edam in Australia, Gouda, Romano, Pure Jersey Cream, Crème Fraîche. Dan and Krystyna McCaul started Alexandrina in 2001 to value-add the family's milk after the 2000 dairy deregulation; the heritage runs three generations back to 1902, the cheese made from eighty Jersey cows grazing next door. A quiet farm-shop operation rather than a developed tasting room. Ring ahead.
