Lee and Janet Lafferty started running wildlife cruises on the Daintree in 1987. Lee co-designed the four vessels — MV Matilda I, II, III and The Golden Dolphin — with marine biologist Walter Stark, shallow-draft and low-emission for getting close to crocodiles, mangroves and riverbank birdlife without disturbing them. Since Lee's death in 2015, his daughter Kianna has run the operation. The only Advanced Ecotourism Certified cruise on the river, departing seven times daily from the village.
