In the ranges inland from Mackay, Eungella is a cool green island of rainforest rising above the cane country, one of the longest stretches of subtropical rainforest in the state. It is the most reliable place in Australia to see a platypus in the wild - at the Broken River, viewing platforms look down on them foraging at dawn and dusk almost every day. Walking tracks wind through the forest past clear streams and pools, and the drive up the range gives sweeping views over the Pioneer Valley. Cool, misty and full of birdsong, it is a mountain refuge above the tropical coast.
