Vincenzo Salpietro Snr and his son Charlie converted a Mount Lawley grocery and beer store into a dedicated liquor retailer in 1974, and the business has stayed in family hands since — Charlie's grandson Vince joined in the late 1990s and has since opened sister stores in Nedlands and Ardross. In 1999 the family built what's described as Perth's largest purpose-built underground wine cellar beneath the Beaufort Street site, which still holds much of the back-vintage Australian wine the shop is known for. Beyond retail, Grand Cru runs a private cellar storage service at controlled temperature and humidity, offers wine valuations for collectors looking to sell, and manages private cellars for some of Perth's serious wine collectors. Three generations and fifty years in, it's counted among Western Australia's oldest family-owned wine and spirit merchants, trading from the same corner long enough to have outlasted several waves of Beaufort Street's changing retail mix. Open seven days, with evening trade Thursday to Saturday.
