The building has done more jobs than most: Mechanics' School of Arts in 1861, Town Hall by 1869, briefly a department store after Reid's burned in 1985. Now it's Ipswich Art Gallery, its proscenium arch and scissor-beam roof restored and turned over to contemporary exhibitions and social history. The children's program is taken seriously here — structured, not decorative.
