The six-sided concrete-and-tin building on Bell Road — locally called the 50 cent house for its coin-like shape — has been a studio and gallery for Walmajarri and Kimberley artists since 1993. Painters work here weekday afternoons, making work rooted in personal histories and country. The name Mangkaja, meaning wet weather shelter in Walmajarri, was given by founding member Kumanjayi Skipper, whose totem — the echidna — still marks the logo.
