Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Wangkatjungka, Walmajarri and Nyikina women meet in the gardens of Marninwarntikura Women's Resource Centre to paint boab nuts, print textiles and string bush-nut jewellery. What began as a soft, informal outlet for women staying at the resource centre's shelter has grown into a working social enterprise, its Design Within Country label carrying prints and homewares out of the Fitzroy Valley and onto racks and runways further afield. The studio sits within the resource centre's grounds on Balanijangarri Road, where visitors can watch artists at work, join a workshop, or buy directly from the on-site and online shop. Fitzroy River floods have closed the doors more than once in recent years, and each time the studio has reopened. It is a rare thing: an art space built first for healing, whose boab carvings and textiles have become sought after well beyond the Kimberley. Contact ahead before making the trip out from Fitzroy Crossing.
