Built from clay and stone quarried on-site, with salvaged remnants of Melbourne's architectural heritage worked in by the artists themselves, Montsalvat has operated as a living community since 1934. Ninety years on, the Eltham property still runs without government funding — five hectares, 34 heritage-listed buildings, five galleries, twenty studios, a ceramic centre, and classes running continuously.
