On the edge of the Pilliga scrub near Wee Waa, the Pilliga Bore Baths tap the Great Artesian Basin for open-air thermal pools, the hot mineral water piped up from far below and cooled to a comfortable soak. Free and open to travellers, with a campground alongside, the baths are a favourite stop on the run through the cotton country of the north-west plains. The surrounding Pilliga - the largest inland woodland in the state - is worth exploring for its birds and its dark, star-filled nights. The soak afterward is the reward.
