Tarraleah Estate

HOBART & SOUTHERN TASMANIA, TAS

The 1930s art deco lodge at the centre of Tarraleah, a planned hydroelectric town the Hydro Electric Commission built when "money and craftsmanship were no object" to house the world's elite hydroelectric engineers. The town peaked at 1,600 people in the 1980s, closed in 1996 (most houses cut up and trucked elsewhere), and the population fell to 4 by 2005 — when the current owners began restoring it. Conde Nast named it Coolest Hotel in the World. Whisky tastings, fly fishing, Highland Cattle, art deco everything. 1.5 hours from Hobart.
