Forty-five minutes north of Perth, the Chittering Valley opens out into rows of citrus that hold their colour long after the rest of the landscape has turned to dust and gum leaves. The Orchard Perth, on Chittering Road at Lower Chittering, is built around this year-round abundance — oranges hang on the trees through every season, while mandarins have their moment between May and October, and the picking calendar generally runs from May through to December. The way in is by tractor: a guided tour rolls slowly through the orchard rows, stopping so visitors can pull fruit straight from the branch and eat it there, juice and all, before deciding what's worth carrying home at $4 a kilo.
It's a working orchard rather than a manicured attraction, and that shows in the details — a packing shed still doing its job alongside the parts of the property given over to visitors, and farm animals wandering the grounds for those who come with children in tow. The Golden Grove Cafe gives the day a natural pause point, somewhere to sit with a coffee once the tractor tour has finished and the smell of citrus oil is still on your hands. Open Thursday to Sunday, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, it's the kind of place that rewards an unhurried visit rather than a quick dash through.
There's something particular about Chittering Valley citrus country — the way the orchard blocks sit against the dry hills, the contrast between glossy leaves and pale earth. Coming here isn't about ticking off a harvest so much as slowing down long enough to taste fruit at the point it's grown for, still warm from the sun, before it's ever seen a cool room or a shop shelf.
