Welby GardenCentre

SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS, NSW

On the corner of the Old Hume Highway and Bendooley Street, this is the largest retail nursery in the Southern Highlands, stocking trees, shrubs, roses and fruit trees suited to the district's cold climate. It was established in 1989 by Challenge Southern Highlands, the local charity that has supported people with disability in the region since 1951, and still operates as a supported employment service: around forty-six staff work across nursery sales, gardening and office administration, with a side business delivering newspapers throughout the Highlands. Its garden maintenance arm, Ground Crew, takes mowing, hedging and planting care out into local gardens and businesses. The centre stays connected to the wider gardening world too — in March 2026 it hosted Gardening Australia's Tammy Huynh for an author event marking Challenge's 75th anniversary. Open seven days, 9am to 4pm, including public holidays. A working nursery worth the stop for cold-climate stock, and proof a garden centre can double as genuine community infrastructure.
